Lure of Lucre

By Our Editor

None will disagree that money is very essential in our life and Aristotle rightly said: “Money is a guarantee that we may have what we want in the future. Though we need nothing at the moment, it ensures the possibility of satisfying a necessary desire when it arises”. In order to get money people have to work hard so that ultimately they will feel happy and satisfied. If they have enough wealth they can take care of themselves and their families and properly educate their children so that their future will also be bright and happy. Hard-earned money at the cost of sweat and toil brings cheer and happiness so that people can enjoy healthy and long life. Nowadays lure of easy money is so great that some people no longer care about others nor do they pay any attention at all to their own conscience and brush aside feelings of guilt. They will stoop so low and are ready to undertake any kind of work as long as it brings enormous amount of money because to them money is God. Henry Fielding issued great warning, “Make money your God, and it will plague you like the Devil.”

Drug trade has become very easy and lucrative business notwithstanding the fact that drugs are doing more harm than good and they spare no one at all. Many of our young boys and girls have become victims of this deadly menace and number is increasing at an exponential rate which, if left uncontrolled and unchecked, will surely spell doom and disaster to society. Law enforcing authorities must keep strict vigil and nip the evil in the bud before it spreads further. Merchants of death should be harshly dealt with and penalty too should be very rigorous otherwise deadly virus will become more dangerous and beyond control. Drugs worth lakhs and hundreds of lakhs of rupees are reported to have been seized nearly every alternate day in North East (NE) region including Meghalaya and the number of drug peddlers seems to be increasing which shows that drug addicts also are increasing at an alarming rate. Hence all concerned citizens are to take note of such a social menace which threatens family stability, the basic structure of society, and take corrective measures with patience and compassion.

Because of easy money a few law enforcing agencies sometimes fall prey to the evil that they are supposed to eliminate. Higher and supervising officers, therefore, must take note of such an event and hence take necessary action before it happens thereby causing shame and embarrassment to the department itself. On July 31, the anti-narcotic task force (ANTF) seized heroin from police constable in Tura sent by drug peddler from Shillong carried by night bus and accordingly the driver, handyman and night bus owner, who is also senior leader of Tura Central Puja Committee, were arrested. In another ANTF operation conducted at Praharinagar area on August 1 three persons, including police constable, were arrested. These are indeed disturbing news which government ought to address in right earnest.
