At the Pa Togan Nengminja Athletics stadium in Tura, citizens and sports enthusiasts from Garo Hills were met with an unpleasant surprise on Friday morning. A section of the synthetic turf at the renowned athletic stadium had fallen victim to an act of vandalism, leaving onlookers both dismayed and puzzled.
The perpetrator, a resident residing just beyond the stadium’s periphery, was apprehended by police personnel on duty. The incident unfolded around 10 am when the individual was caught red-handed stripping the running track at the far end of the stadium. Subsequently, he has been taken into custody.
The athletic stadium, a major attraction drawing thousands of visitors, has been a symbol of pride for Garo Hills since its inauguration. Its magnificent construction has consistently impressed onlookers, making it a focal point for various events and gatherings.
The stadium, built to international standards, played host to the track and field events of the 5th Meghalaya Games. This year’s games witnessed the discovery of sporting talents and the breaking of records, further adding to the stadium’s significance. However, the recent act of vandalism has cast a shadow over its reputation, leaving the community grappling with a mix of disappointment and disbelief.
