Manipur Assembly adopts NRC resolution to curb illegal settlers

Imphal, Mar 2: To prevent illegal immigrants from Myanmar, the Manipur Assembly on Friday adopted a unanimous resolution urging the centre to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the State.

Manipur share 398 km unfenced border with neighbouring Myanmar.

The resolution urging the Union Home Ministry to implement the NRC in Manipur moved by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.

Taking to X, CM N.Biren Singh said, “Today, the Manipur Legislative Assembly took a significant step by reaffirming our resolution passed on 5th August 2022. It is our firm belief that the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur is crucial for safeguarding the interests of our state and contributing to the greater good of our nation.”

“The decision to urge the Government of India to expedite the implementation of the NRC reflects our commitment to ensuring the security and integrity of Manipur. I urge all citizens to support this endeavor as we strive to build a stronger, more prosperous Manipur for generations to come,” he said.

After coming to power for the second consecutive time in the March 2022 assembly elections, the BJP led government headed by Singh, unanimously passed a resolution in the state assembly on August 5, 2022 urging the Center to implement the NRC in Manipur.
