SHILLONG:
Heavy rains that lashed parts of Meghalaya since June 9 have inundated a few areas in Shillong, though for a short period of time – due to poor drainage system; the situation is, however, riskier in the outskirts, especially the Pynursla road that is often known as landslide-prone region.
Triggered by heavy rain, a huge boulder rolled down a hill at Khohyiar near Lad Mawkhap on the way to Pynursla and landed on the road in the wee hours of June 10.
Local residents said, had the incident took place during the heavy rush of vehicles along this road, it could have been fatal.
Residents stated that the heavy boulder was removed by one person, fondly called Deng, who, on seeing the heavy boulder in the middle of the road during his morning walk around 5 am, immediately went home to take out his JCB and remove the rock to the side of the road.
“He has always been helpful. Whenever this area was hit by landslides, he would always volunteer to help out. We call him the good Samaritan,” a local resident said.
