MeECL reformation proposal to be taken up soon

Prestone Tynsong said, “We already reached the final stage of reformation of the MeECL…and the proposal will be placed in the next Cabinet meeting, for its approval.”

SHILLONG:

The power department will soon submit a proposal for reformation of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) which includes appointment of a full-fledged Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) before the state Cabinet for its approval.

Informing this on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Power Prestone Tynsong said, “We already reached the final stage of reformation of the MeECL…and the proposal will be placed in the next Cabinet meeting, for its approval.”

The Independent Inquiry Committee had strongly recommended the state government to appoint a full time Chairman cum Managing Director (CMD) of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeELC) and to come up with new systems to look into the procurement aspects.

When asked, Tynsong said that he will also take up the issue as “we really wanted to have a dedicated professional in MeECL who can fully spend his time for the running and functioning of the MeECL.”

He added that the government may also create separate post of the chairman and managing director of the MeECL.

Not willing to comment further on the proposal, the deputy chief minister however said, “I assure you that reformation will take place and the top most management level should be a full time and a professional who can really run properly for the entire corporation as in the MeECL, which is having three subsidiaries – transmission, generation and distribution.”

Referring to the disappointment expressed by the Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma over the report of the inquiry committee, Tynsong asked if Sangma had read the detailed report or if he was just presuming things.

“If he just presumes, tell him not to say anything until and unless you get the copy and the copy also will be made public as we are here for transparency. If he had already gone through that report I don’t know as it has not reached my table yet. Therefore, don’t consider that statement made by Dr Sangma as it is too early to say anything,” he stated.
