SHILLONG:

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday expressed hope that Meghalaya and Assam will be able to end differences in six bordering areas within the next few weeks.

Addressing the 50th Meghalaya Day celebration virtually, Sangma said, “I am hopeful that in the next few weeks we should be able find a concrete solution and take a decision on the first six areas of difference.”

Stating that the issue has been pending for a long time, the chief minister said the two state governments have already submitted their respective reports on the inter-state border to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

On Thursday, Sangma along with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met and apprised the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, about the border agreement made between the two states during a meeting in New Delhi.

The reports are being examined by the MHA and the two chief ministers will again meet the Union Home Minister after the Republic Day celebrations.

Sangma also thanked all the past governments, chief ministers, ministers, government officials for working hard to resolve the boundary issue.

“This government in the last six months has tried to take the discussion to its logical conclusion,” he said.

He informed that in the last few months different regional committees were formed to visit 36 villages in the six areas of difference. The regional committees have accordingly submitted their reports to the respective state governments.
