Meghalaya CM urges dairy farmers to upscale milk production

Chief Minister also said that dairy farmers in the state must not only cater to local markets but look forward to exporting milk outside the state.

SHILLONG:

Observing that Meghalaya has not been able to produce sufficient amount of milk to keep up with its burgeoning demand in the state, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on June 27, urged the farmers to think big and upscale the milk producing capacity.

“Close to two and half lakh MT of milk is required and only about 40 per cent of that is being met, which means there is a huge market within the state,” the Chief Minister observed, while inaugurating a milk collection centre of Umlyngka Primary Milk Producers Co-operative Society, on June 27.

He said that dairy farmers in the state must not only cater to local markets but look forward to exporting milk outside the state.

Local MLA and cabinet minister Hamlet Dohling, who was also present at the do, informed that the society has sought financial assistance from the Chief Minister for the construction of an additional floor which will be utilised as a training centre to train people involved in milk production.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister informed that the matter will be discussed with the local legislator on the additional funds required for floor maintenance and in the long run, it will not only cater to the locals, but also serve as a regional training institute.

Society president PR Kharbteng informed that the Umlyngka Primary Milk Producers Co-operative Society currently has 120 members, and produces 4500 litres of milk every day. The milk is sold to East Khasi Hills District Milk Union or Na Ri.

Kharbteng recalled how in the year 2000-2006, when the society struggled financially as the Veterinary Department was unable to pay their bills, they had to resort to taking loans from private lenders.

Kharbteng also said that it was in 1987-88 that two to three men from Umlyngka decided to start the dairy business selling 20 litres in one day at the rate of Rs 4 per litre to the Veterinary Department.
