Meghalaya has always been a football hub, says Bhaichung Bhutia

PREANA CHETTRI

We all know Sunil Chhetri is making all the noise in Indian football now, but it was Baichung Bhutia who led the way for over two decades till Chettri took over the mantle.

Bhaichung Bhutia, famously known as ‘Sikkimese Sniper’ said Meghalaya has always been a football hub.

In an exclusive interview with The Meghalayan, Bhutia says he is impressed with the potential that Meghalaya footballers have.

What is your thought on Meghalaya football?

Baichung Bhutia: We have all been inspired by the story of Lajong, the first club from the North East to play in the I-league. In fact, one of the boys from Shillong is playing for India (Under-16) as a goalkeeper

Tell us about your project in Shillong

Baichung: Twelve years after it was set up in Delhi, Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools (BBFS) has finally reached the North East. It has come up with a residential academy in partnership with Assam Rifles Public School in Shillong. This is the fifth branch of the BBFS Residential Academy, with similar programs currently running across campuses in Delhi NCR, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. I’m sure the academic and sporting facilities will provide our student-athletes with the best platform to hone their skills. I’m very excited to have extended our residential academy programmes to every corner of India

How much of grassroots programmes help Indian football?

Baichung: In India, the grassroots and training programmes are still small and I believe that the North East region of India has a lot of sporting talent and there are many children wanting to make football their career and not lose out on their education at the same time.

If not in football, what would you have done in life?

Baichung: I’m not sure because when I was a kid, I wanted to be a football player. So I achieved my dream. That’s the most important thing. I must say, that was my ultimate goal.

Which is your favourite day of the week?

Baichung: There is no doubt that Sunday is my favourite day because it is free from stress. Since I travel a lot, this is especially critical for Gangtok, which, as a mountain city, has inherent constraints on space.

Who are some young prospects you consider as the next-gen of Indian Football?

Baichung: Looking ahead, there are some really good young Indian football players playing for India. The likes Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem and Suresh Singh among others are special talents to look forward to.

Would you rather be able to speak every language in the world or be able to talk to animals?

Baichung: I would love to speak any language fluently.

Your message to the budding footballers of the state?

Baichung: When you play, don’t worry about your performance. Just enjoy your game. Make sure you train harder. Nothing comes easily. It is essential to note that talent, dedication and hard work are very important. Always remember, playing with your feet is one thing, but playing with your heart is another.
