 TURA:

Amidst resentment against the Centre’s move to conduct the central university entrance test (CUET) for this academic session, the government has moved the University Grants Commission (UGC) seeking an extension of the date of the examination in the state.

The government has also urged the UGC to set up CUET examination centres in each of the 12 districts so that each and every aspirant gets an opportunity to sit for the examination, informed chief minister Conrad K Sangma, on April 29.

The government has also written to the National Testing Agency (NTA), which is conducting the CUET exam, in this regard, the chief minister said. The last date for submission of forms for the CUET is 6 May.

Terming the government’s moves as efforts to “ease” students’ burden, the chief minister, however, asked the student community not to be complacent and fill out the form at the earliest.

“Students should not wait but rather go ahead and fill the form as early as possible because all the colleges are affiliated to NEHU, which is a central university as well,” said Sangma.

The chief minister also admitted that UGC’s announcement to conduct the CUET was a “sudden” one and it has put the student community of the state is a kind of quandary and that is why the government has moved the commission asking for an extension of the date and setting up of examination centres.

Notably, there are hundreds of higher secondary students in distant areas of Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills, Nongstoin in West Khasi Hills, Baghmara in South Garo Hills and even Mahendraganj and Dalu towns of Garo Hills, who will face difficulties in commuting to the limited examination centres to appear for the test.
