GUWAHATI:
Two personalities from Meghalaya – Padma Shri Trinity Saioo and Padma Shri Nanadro B Marak were felicitated by the Spices Board of India at a function organised on the occasion of the International Buyers Sellers Meet & Spice Conclave in Guwahati on June 30.
The conclave was organised to boost export of Agricultural Products & Spices from Northeast.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma felicitated both personalities on behalf of the Spices Board of India.
Trinity Saioo from Mulieh village of West Jaintia Hills district was presented with the fourth highest civilian award ‘Padma Shri’ for leading turmeric farming during 2020.
She is working with the Lakadong Variety of turmeric and assists the unread women in learning the methods of organic farming to boost their earnings.
Trinity Saioo is known for her ‘selfless work’ towards uplifting the livelihoods of the farmers in her district. Today she is working with more than 900 farmers and probably touching thousands.
Nanandro B. Marak from Gondagare village of West Garo Hills is known for his unique method for growing pepper alongside an areca-nut plantation.
He is also the recipient of the Best Pepper Farmer award from India conferred by the International Pepper Community in the year 2018.
He is a pioneer in organic black pepper farming in the region and also conducts training sessions for farmers in organic farming. By now he has been able to motivate over 8000 farmers. His sheer dedication and contribution to agriculture were recognized by the country by conferring the Padma Shri award in 2021.
Arunachal Pradesh bagged four out of six awards for the year 2019-20 and 2020-21 in the Large Cardamom Productivity Award at the conclave.
The farmers who received the award are: Neelam Jeel, first prize (2019-20) Ngurang Yame, 2nd prize (women category- 2020-21), Joram Tamin, (second prize 2021-22), Ashati Dele, (first prize-2020-21).
