Meitei radical group Arambai Tenggol behind kidnap of police officer in Imphal, says Manipur police

Manipur, March 1: The radical Meitei group Arambai Tenggol that has a history of militant activities and has for long been named as the main perpetrators of the ethnic violence in the Imphal valley since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May, last year, has now been named as the prime accused in the abduction of a senior police officer in a deliberate attempt on his life and the attack on his house and family members on the evening of February 27 in Imphal.

Condemning the attack on additional SP (operations, Imphal West) Moirangthem Amit Singh, Manipur police issued a media statement on Thursday and also shared details about the sequences of events that occured, adding Singh was “also abducted, beaten and later released after timely intervention by the (police) department”.

The police said Arambai Tenggol members had “carried out a targeted attack on” Singh and inspector P. Achouba Meitei — both of whom had conducted the search of two vehicles stolen/snatched by some unknown armed miscreants in Imphal on Tuesday.

The police statement assumes significance because it comes a day after police commandos in the valley districts staged a symbolic “arms down” protest and senior Manipur Police Service officers met chief minister N. Biren Singh on Wednesday.
