Miscreants set vehicle on fire days after it was seized for illegal cattle smuggling

GUWAHATI:

A vehicle which was seized by the police for smuggling cattle along the Assam-Bangladesh border, was burnt by unknown miscreants in the early hours of April 16 at the Gauripur Police Station campus in Assam’s Dhubri district.

“A truck driver informed on-duty police personnel that a vehicle was burning near the police station campus, following which police rushed to the spot and managed to douse the flame. However, the vehicle was completely burnt,” said Ritu Jyoti Nath, officer-in-charge of Gauripur Police Station.

The vehicle bearing registration No AS-16-6280 was seized by Gauripur police on April 12 for illegal transportation of four cattle from Assam to Bangladesh through the border.

Nath said that further investigation is underway to nab the culprits responsible for burning the vehicle and soon the miscreants will be behind the bars.

He revealed that it is a new technique in which cattle smugglers are using luxury vehicles to transport cows so that they can avoid police checking.

Earlier on April 13, Golakganj police had nabbed four smugglers involved in transporting cattle, and seized a vehicle bearing registration No AS-01AV-2394.

Two persons identified as Mofijul Haque (West Bengal) and Kashem Ali (Pokalagi village under Golakganj police station) were arrested in connection with the smuggling.

On the same day, police recovered two more cattle and arrested two other smugglers along with a luxury car bearing registration No AS-17E-5670.

The rescued cattle were sent to the cowshed by Golakganj police.
