Power Minister A T Mondal has emphasised the benefits of dams and assured that the government is taking utmost care about the safety aspect.
The minister attended a programme as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
Central Water Commission, Shillong, Ministry of Jal Shakti in collaboration with Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited and Water Resources Department, Government of Meghalaya organised an outreach programme to promote dam tourism at Water Sports Complex of Umian Dam on Tuesday.
He appealed for the maintenance and upkeep of the dam by the public especially in the catchment areas and stated that innovative approaches and technology intervention contributed to tourism and overall development citing the example of Hoover Dam, USA.
The programme was represented by various departments of the state government viz. MeECL, Water Resources, Public Health Engineering Department, Soil and Water Conservation Department and various officers from Ministry of Jal Shakti, Central Water Commission, Central Ground Water Board, Brahmaputra Board, teachers/students of Kendriya Vidyalaya and villagers of Umiam.
The programme encompassed various activities which covered technical aspects like importance and contribution of dams, the importance of Umiam Dam, development of other activities related to tourism, the development of the state with the development of dams and importance of water.
