More protests called by groups opposed to GHADC CEM

TURA:

The student groups in Garo Hills who are spearheading the ongoing protests against newly elected chief executive member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council have refused to end their agitation indicating that more pressure would be exerted on him to step down this week.

Leaders of the Garo Students Union, FKJGP, ADE, FAF, and AYWO announced on Sunday that they will continue to protest until the newly elected CEM resigns from his position in the district council.

They have indicated that they would continue with their opposition to CEM Rakesh A Sangma’s election for another four days, beginning Tuesday of this week.

‘From tribal status to embracing Garo customs’

The protesting groups which had accused Rakesh A Sangma of being a non-Garo on account of his father has refused to acknowledge his tribal status despite his mother being a Garo and the Agitok clan, to whom Rakesh and his mother belongs, coming out in support of him under the matrilineal system.

“Rakesh cannot be termed a Garo because he has all throughout his life lived and followed the customs and traditions of a different community. He has not lived the life of a Garo,” claimed the protesting groups.
