MPSC yet to take call on video recording of interviews

Proposal of recording the interviews for transparency in recruitment process

SHILLONG:

The Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) is yet to take a call on whether to do video recording of interviews for transparency in recruitment process.

MPSC chairman, P R Marwein, told reporters on November 21 that the Commission was looking at all possible aspects of the system and only after that will decide whether to go ahead with it.

He, however, said that the system would be desirable but could be difficult to pull it off given the nature of locations, adding, “maybe in the future we can do that.”

As for the demand to completely do away with personal interviews, he said the element was brought in when candidates were very few and recruitment to most of the posts was through direct personal interviews, but because of the increasing number of candidates, it is now difficult.

“But if we are to do away with the personal interviews we have to change the entire system. We are mostly following the UPSC pattern of examination and personal interviews and the marks are allocated accordingly and MPSC will not have the authority to do that and we will not do that,” he said.

Marwein further said that the sole criterion of selection is merit and not any other consideration while responding to the allegation that people are losing faith in the MPSC.

“Everybody will have their own doubts especially those who could not make it but then we tell all candidates that we are here to do justice to all and whoever is the best we select strictly based on merit…,” he said.

He also informed that steps are being taken to revamp and improve the functioning of the MPSC.

He said that roughly there are over 1,000 posts, which are already advertised but examinations are yet to be conducted. “There are quite a number of posts to be advertised. We are not able to do it because we are waiting for the roster. Once we get the roster from the departments concerned, we will issue the advertisements immediately,” Marwein assured.

When asked, the MPSC chief said all along the commission has been following the reservation policy without the roster system in place.

“Now because of the court order the departments need to prepare the roster without which even for those posts which we have advertised earlier we cannot conduct the exams and interview now.

Due to that, there is definitely a delay but the departments are working on it,” he added.
