Mukul Sangma slams BJP over ‘forming govt’ comment

He was responding to BJP's assertions that no government will be formed without the saffron party in 2023.

SHILLONG:

Leader of Opposition and former chief minister Mukul Sangma criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on January 6 for its dirty intent and urged the people of the state to give the party a befitting reply in the upcoming Assembly polls in the state.

He was responding to BJP’s assertions that no government will be formed without the saffron party in 2023.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “What are they trying to say? Are they trying to buy the MLAs? Are they trying to engage in corruption? This is a reflection of their dirty intent, their dirty mind. I think the people of the state should give them a befitting reply.”

He said it was the wisdom of the people of the state that there was no BJP in 2010 and 2013.

“They have tried to supersede even before the mandate, the very basic tenets of democracy. It is quite offensive to the electorate itself and I would like to condemn this,” Sangma added.

When asked, the former chief minister said, “That is why you see the government which is more a remote control government and the people and the state as a whole are paying the price. That is why the people don’t want this repetition.”

Earlier last year, BJP state president Ernest Mawrie had claimed that the message on the ground is clear that no government will be formed without the BJP in 2023.

He was referring to the claims and counter claims by various political parties about obtaining a majority in the upcoming Assembly elections in the state and said these political parties were building castles in the air.
