Nagaon police firing: FIR under NDPS Act lodged against former student leader

GUWAHATI:

Amidst widespread protest against police firing in Nagaon on Saturday, an FIR was lodged against the injured former All Assam Students Union (AASU) leader Kirti Kamal Bora, on January 24.

The FIR was lodged by assistant sub-inspector Pradip Bania, who had allegedly fired at Bora on Saturday night, at the Nagaon police station. Based on the FIR, the officer-in-charge of station has registered a case No 130/2022 under sections 294, 325, 353, 307 read with sections 21(A), 29 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), 1985. On Sunday, Kirti Kamal Bora’s father Nilkamal Bora too had lodged an FIR against Bania.

 In his statement to the press on Saturday, Kirti had said that he had gone to get some medicines for his mother when he saw some police personnel allegedly beating a man near his locality. “When I asked them why they are roughing up the person, the police personnel abused me verbally and warned me of dire consequences if I don’t get away from there. When I asked them why they are passing such remarks, they pulled me to the corner of the street and started thrashing me with sticks. Afterward, they shot me in the leg,” Bora had alleged.

After the incident, Bora was initially admitted to Nagaon Civil Hospital but later, was shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Today, he has also been tested positive for Covid-19 and has been shifted to the Covid ward at the GMCH. Earlier on Sunday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had constituted a one-man inquiry committee to investigate the matter.

Meanwhile, AASU, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS) continued to protest against the incident demanding the arrest of Bania on Monday.

Thousands of students from various educational institutions including Nowgong College, ADP College, Nowgong Girls’ College too staged a road blockade on old NH 37 near Nowgong College Clock Tower police point demanding immediate suspension of superintendent of police Anand Mishra.

Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi also took part in the protest and criticised the chief minister for providing upper hand to the police. Gogoi also visited the family members Kirti at Kachalukhuwa.

The activists of All Nagaon District Students Union (ANDSU) also staged a protest separately in front of the DC office against police atrocities on the former student leader.

The student body also sent separate memorandums to chief minister and director general of police through the deputy commissioner.
