Narrow escape for Tura MBOSE team in encounter with wild elephants

Baghmara, March 7: A three member team of officials from the Meghalaya Board Of School Education on examination duty had a providential escape after encountering wild elephants just meters away from them on a border road on Thursday morning.

The officials were on their way to Baghmara to oversee the ongoing examinations of the higher secondary school leaving certificate or HSSLC when they came upon a chance encounter.

“It happened around 9:30 in the morning at Jatrakona while we were proceeding to Baghmara via the border road,. We suddenly saw in the near distance two adult wild elephants” recalled Sean D W Momin, one of the officials.

Fortunate for them, the wild elephants didn’t linger on for long.

“They blocked the road for probably around 5 mins and then retreated into the nearby forests. We waited until it was safe to proceed,” said the MBOSE official.

Not taking any chances, the team returned via the longer Sibbari- Chokpot road to Tura.

Just two days earlier, a motorist was killed by another wild herd in Selsella region of West Garo Hills while returning home late in the night.
