NCP state chief Saleng Sangma resigns as MLA; set to join Congress

Sangma tendered his resignation to Commissioner & Secretary, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Andrew Simons at the Old Assembly premises in the city today.

SHILLONG:

State president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Gambegre MLA Saleng Sangma resigned as a member of the Assembly on January 23, citing a lack of opportunities as one of the main reasons.

Sangma tendered his resignation to Commissioner & Secretary, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Andrew Simons at the Old Assembly premises in the city today.

Speaking to media persons, Sangma said with NCP, he wasn’t able to do much for the people and wasn’t able to spread his wings.

The former MLA is all set to join Congress later in the afternoon.

Sangma, who was earlier part of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government, said the government is faced with an anti-incumbency crisis, and accused the ruling party of leaving partners behind in the decision-making process.

It may be mentioned that Sangma will be returning to Congress today. In 2008, he first won on a Congress ticket but contested the 2013 election as an independent candidate after he fell out of favour with the then Chief Minister Mukul Sangma. In 2018, he won on an NCP ticket.
