Neeraj Chopra makes history with first gold for India in World Championship

Chopra, who has been bothered by an injury in the last few months, killed the competition in the Hungarian capital with a massive throw of 88.17 in his second turn.

BUDAPEST (HUNGARY):

Marking a momentous occasion in India’s sporting history, India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra scripted yet another remarkable chapter on Sunday. He etched his name as the first Indian athlete to seize the coveted gold medal at the World Athletics Championships, setting an indelible record in the men’s javelin throw final in Budapest.

Amidst eager anticipation, Chopra’s second attempt yielded a stupendous throw, propelling the javelin to an awe-inspiring distance of 88.17 meters – a feat that triumphantly secured the highest position on the podium.

Chopra’s triumph in Budapest carries profound significance, underscoring the strides he has taken since the 2022 edition of the Championships where he claimed the silver medal. This victory not only crowns his relentless dedication and perseverance but also cements his legacy as a pioneer in Indian athletics.

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem took the silver medal, the first World Championship medal for his country, with a distance of 87.82 while Czech Republic’s Yakub Vadlejch retained the bronze he won in Oregon last year, with a distance of 86.67.
