NEHU ragging case: University asked to hand over papers to victim’s family

The NSUS informed that during the meeting, it was brought to light that the vice-chancellor had already filed a First Information Report (FIR) at Tura Police station on October 14, thereby entrusting the authorities with the responsibility of conducting a thorough investigation of this incident.

SHILLONG:

A meeting was convened among the Naga Students’ Union Shillong (NSUS), the Angami Elders’ Forum Shillong (AEFS), the Angami Students Union Shillong (ASUS), North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU), and the Naga students of NEHU to discuss the issue of ragging of a Naga student in Tura Campus on October 16.

This meeting also included representatives of NEHU, including Prof SR Joshi, the Registrar, and Prof Lucy Zehol, chairman of the fact finding committee tasked with investigating the recent incident at NEHU Tura Campus.

However, the vice-chancellor of NEHU was unable to attend, owing to a summon by the Governor of Meghalaya regarding the ragging case in Tura Campus recently.

The NSUS informed that during the meeting, it was brought to light that the vice-chancellor had already filed a First Information Report (FIR) at Tura Police station on October 14, thereby entrusting the authorities with the responsibility of conducting a thorough investigation of this incident.

“Hence, this fulfilled a condition put forth in the charter of demands put forward by the Naga Students’ Union Shillong on October 11,” the NSUS statement added.

The NSUS, Angami Elders’ Forum Shillong, Angami Students Union Shillong, NEHU Students’ Union, and Naga students of NEHU has jointly requested the university authorities to hand over three documents to the victim’s family or their representatives which includes a veritable copy of the FIR said to have been submitted by the vice-chancellor to the Tura Police on October 14, an authentic copy of the report compiled by the internal fact finding committee on this case and a formally endorsed missive from the vice-chancellor assuring that NEHU is resolutely committed to taking appropriate measures, in strict compliance with the UGC Anti-Ragging Laws, regardless of whether the police investigation will garner results.

Meanwhile, the NSUS, ASUS, AEFS, NEHUSU and the Naga students of NEHU expressed their profound gratitude, reposing trust in the expertise and confidence of both NEHU and Tura police that the guilty parties will be expeditiously brought to justice for their unlawful actions.
