NEP to impact NEHU’s ability to admit students in 2026

The University remains dedicated to successfully implementing NEP 2020 in accordance with its academic and institutional goals.

North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) said on August 11 that it may experience capacity issues for the academic year 2026.

“It’s important to note that NEHU, being a central university, might face constraints in terms of its capacity to admit students for the academic years 2026 or 2027,” NEHU PRO Dr. Davidson Pyngrope said in a statement issued here.

“This potential limitation arises if the central government issues a directive for the University to align its student admission criteria with the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020,” he said.

According to the statement, the Vice Chancellor’s previous communications highlighted the potential consequences of a policy implementation delay on the eligibility of state youngsters wishing to enroll in other central institutions in 2026.

Furthermore, orders to conform to the admission standards indicated in the NEP 2020 may have an impact on NEHU’s ability to admit students for the stipulated years.

According to the statement, the vice chancellor, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, met with the principals of several colleges, and a significant majority—approximately 90%—of the principals indicated support for the University’s decision to implement NEP 2020.

The VC stated that no college principal had communicated to the University expressing their unwillingness to accept the NEP 2020.

“In the event that a change in consensus among the colleges does occur, the Vice-Chancellor stated that the University would consider accommodating the concerns of those institutions. It is important to highlight that this statement was made within a hypothetical context and does not reflect an actual intent to reverse the decision,” the statement said.

The University also feels that it is critical to give a balanced perspective and to accurately represent the University’s stance on educational policy issues. The University is completely committed to encouraging academic achievement and ensuring a smooth transition to the NEP 2020 beginning with the 2023-24 session for the benefit of students and the entire educational community.

According to the statement, the vice chancellor stressed a critical point regarding the timing for implementing a specific policy. The main message was that any delay in implementing this policy could have serious consequences for the eligibility of state youth who want to study at other central institutions in 2026.
