Neuralink’s first human brain implant successful, recovering well: Musk

NEW DELHI:

Elon Musk announced that Neuralink, his brain-computer interface company, has successfully implanted its first device in a human, with the test subject recovering well.

The product, named Telepathy, aims to enable control of electronic devices through thought alone. Musk revealed that initial results indicate promising neuron spike detection.

Neuralink received FDA approval for human trials last year and has been seeking test subjects for the six-year initial trial. The first users are expected to be individuals who have lost limb function, with the ultimate goal of enhancing communication speed for those like Stephen Hawking.

Neuralink, founded in 2016, raised an additional $43 million in venture capital in November 2023, bringing its total funding to $323 million.

The company’s technology involves implanting ultra-thin threads in the brain connected to a chip with electrodes capable of reading data from neuron groups. The ongoing PRIME Study aims to assess the safety and functionality of Neuralink’s brain-computer interface.
