Nongstoin:
The Special Judge (POCSO) in Nongstoin on January 10 delivered verdicts in two cases of child sexual assault, resulting in the conviction and sentencing of the accused individuals.
The first case dates back to December 7, 2018, when an FIR was filed regarding the sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl by one Slander Mawlein.
The Nongstoin Police Station initiated Case No. 99(12)2018 under sections 506 IPC R/W 5(m)(n)/6 POCSO Act, assigning the investigation to WPSI F. K. Marak of Nongstoin Women Police Station. After proceedings, the Investigating Officer charge-sheeted the case under section 506 IPC R/W Sec 5(m)(n)/6 POCSO Act.
Following a review of the evidence, the Court of the Special Judge (POCSO), Nongstoin, on January 3, 2024, convicted Slander Mawlein. The accused was sentenced to 10 years of Rigorous Imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 30,000 for the offence punishable under section 6 of the POCSO Act.
Additionally, a one-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 5,000 were awarded for the offence under section 506 Part-I IPC. Both sentences are to run concurrently.
In the second case, an FIR was lodged on July 25, 2018, concerning the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl by one Pynshailin Sangriang.
Nongstoin Police Station initiated Case No. 61(07)2018 under sections 7/8 POCSO Act, with WPSI F. K. Marak leading the investigation. The Investigating Officer charge-sheeted the case under section 3(A)/4 POCSO Act.
On January 5, 2024, the Court of the Special Judge (POCSO), Nongstoin, issued a verdict in favour of the prosecution. Sangriang was convicted and sentenced to 7 years of Rigorous Imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs. 20,000 for the offence punishable under section 4 of the POCSO Act.
