Nongstoin police cracks down on tobacco sales near schools

Accordingly, challans were issued and on-spot fines were realized from the perpetrators. A total of Rs. 1550/- fines were realised.

NONGSTOIN:

A drive to enforce the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) was undertaken by Nongstoin Police Station in Nongstoin area on September 8. The drive was conducted by a team of police officers led by Sub Inspector K. Mawlong.

The team inspected all the shops nearby the schools in Nongstoin area and detected a total of 29 cases of violation under section 6b of COTPA Act. This section prohibits the sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutions.

Accordingly, challans were issued and on-spot fines were realized from the perpetrators. A total of Rs. 1550/- fines were realised.

Additionally, the team issued a warning to anyone found selling cigarettes or smoking in public within 100 yards of West Khasi Hills’ schools and universities.

The public has been urged by Nongstoin Police to support the campaign and aid in establishing a tobacco-free and healthy environment for the neighborhood.
