North East Olympic Games

By The Editor

In ancient times people depended on hunting and agriculture to survive. During hunting and armed only with primitive tools they had to run faster to catch their preys and if chased by wild and dangerous animals they had to run swiftly and quickly to survive. In doing so they had to climb big and tall trees or jump across dangerous ditches .Thus they became normally fit, strong and healthy. Wars then were frequent and so able-bodied youths had to bear arms and fight. When peace returned, they indulged in various kinds of games and sports to keep themselves engaged and to manifest their skills. Gradually, people began to organise tournaments and competitions guided by rules and regulations laid down and accepted by participants. The origin of Olympic Games was initiated by ancient Greeks during 776 BCE as religious festivals to pay tribute to their pagan gods and lasted for more than 1,000 years till the Roman reign. It was revived by Frenchman, Baron Pierre De Coubertin (1862-1937) who wished to renew ideals of body, mind and spirit. He succeeded and so modern Olympic Games began in 1896 at Athens, Greece followed by other similar games in subsequent years.

First North East Olympic Games (NEOG) was held in October 2018 with over 12 disciplines in which the eight NE states participated. Due to Covid pandemic, games were not held for two years and were resumed on November 10 this year with pomp and grandeur which will last till November 16. Opening ceremony was held at SAI (Sports Authority of India) Training Centre, NEHU (North Eastern Hill University), Shillong  attended by about 3000 athletes and dignitaries . Arch gate was designed to represent Meghalaya’s world famous living root bridges and Olympic torch was tastefully crafted in traditional style using local materials. March-past by the athletes looked grand and oath-taking was led by Meghalaya karateka Wandahunshisha Mawblei, the Game’s official anthem ‘Play’ being performed by Summersalt and other artistes from North East. There were also musical entertainments by Tarari Choir, Pynter Orchestra and Lamphrang Syiemlieh and Ensemble, fireworks display; laser show; cultural song and dance and stunning drone show. Noted television presenter and actor Mandira Bedi was  the emcee who expressed honour and privileged to be part of the grand event.

Star Meghalaya runner Marso Kyndait handed over the Olympic torch to Chief Minster Conrad K. Sangma who graced the occasion and then placed it on the pedestal to remain for the rest of the games. In his speech, he  stressed and believed that the youth are greatest strength of the nation. Sports and Youth Affairs Ministers Banteidor Lyngdoh appreciated volunteers and stakeholders who have worked very hard to make the grand event success.
