GUWAHATI:
The first foreign language learning centre in the Northeast was formally inaugurated by ICAR deputy director-general Dr RC Agarwal at Assam Agriculture University (AAU), Jorhat, on April 2.
The centre also started French and German languages classes for the first batch of 40 students on the same day.
With the inauguration of the centre, students of AAU and its affiliated nine colleges can learn Spanish, French and German languages from the centre through online mode.
The centre has been set up under the initiative of AAU vice-chancellor Bidyut Chandan will help researchers who have to visit foreign countries for study.
“Many students of AAU and its affiliated colleges have to face language problems when they pursue higher study in foreign countries. Initially, the students can learn English, French, German and Spanish at this centre online,” said Dr Ranjit Kumar Saud, associate director, extension education, AAU.
The centre is located on the second floor of Central Library, and chief librarian, Dr Chandan Kumar Hazarika will be the in-charge of the facility.
The centre has been set up with financial assistance from the World Bank under the National Higher Education Project (NAHEP) of the ministry of education, the government of India.
AAU director (agricultural research) Ashok Kumar Bhattacharyya, krishivigyan guru Jayanta Deka, director of extension education Prasanna Kumar Pathak and chief librarian Chandan Kumar Hazarika were present at the inaugural function.
On the same day, Agarwal also inaugurated a digital classroom and a hostel for PG students in the campus.
