NPP gains at expense of Congress as supporters switch over in Mylliem

Shillong, March 25: As the Lok Sabha polls draw near, the National People’s Party (NPP) believes it has the edge given the rising number of defections from other parties into their camp, such as Monday’s joining of dozens of young Congress supporters and workers at Mylliem constituency of East Khasi Hills.

The NPP staged a welcome ceremony at the Indoor Stadium in Nongkseh to press for those crossing over.

Interestingly, Ronnie V Lyngdoh of the Congress won the MLA election held last year in Mylliem and is currently the Leader of Opposition (LO) in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

The defection by his party’s youth leaders and supporters to the rival NPP camp is a setback to the Congress just as the campaigning gets underway.

The youth leaders were welcomed by NPP State leaders including MLA Weiladmiki Shylla, MLA Banteidor Lyngdoh, Former MLA of Mylliem Hamlemson Dohling, Party State Treasurer Daniel M Thangkhiew, Party Spokesperson Himalaya Shangpliang, and leaders of the National People’s Youth Front (NPYF).

Last Friday, State President of the NPP, Prestone Tynsong, welcomed over two dozen leaders and supporters of the United Democratic Party (UDP) in Ri Bhoi District.

With the joining of leaders from different political parties and the announcement of BJP support in the two Parliamentary Constituency seats, the National People’s Party is gearing up with high hopes for the upcoming MP election scheduled on April 19.
