NPP not for pre-poll alliance

SHILLONG:

The National People’s Party (NPP) will not forge any alliance with BJP or any other political parties for the 2023 assembly elections.

“We are not going to contest next assembly elections in alliance with anyone, including the BJP”, the NPP national president and Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma said.

Sangma said that the NPP has maintained two principles – when they fight an election they do it on their own since it is about the identity and ideology of the party. Secondly, the NPP has normally worked with the National Democratic Alliance in all areas.

The National Committee Meeting of the NPP was held today at Constitution of India Club, New Delhi.

The meeting was chaired by the chief minister and attended by members of the national committee and presidents of different states units.

During the meeting, the party discussed the upcoming assembly elections in the state, Tripura and Nagaland.

Briefing the media after the meeting, Sangma said that the party is gearing up for the upcoming polls.

On TMC’s entry in Meghalaya, the NPP national president said that they have captured the space of the opposition but it has created a further faction within its own party.

“Now within the space of what Trinamool has got, they are now creating another space within themselves. So there is a further faction that is going to take place,” Sangma said.

TMC has entered Meghalaya and is trying to create noise but it is not simple that just by massive publicity they would make any impact, the NPP chief remarked.

“It is not about putting up banners, posters and flags. It is much more complicated than that,” Sangma added.

During the national committee meeting, the decision to form different committees to further strengthen the party and activities was also taken.

The chief minister also said that whenever the party finds that there is a situation where the party needs to take a stand even though it may be against the general principle of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) the NPP has not shied away to take their independent and individual stand keeping the interest of the citizens of the state in mind.
