GUWAHATI:
The Assam Forest department officials arrested one man from Guwahati’s Mathgharia area for killing a barking deer for meat, on April 20.
The arrested person has been identified as Shyam Chandra Ray, a resident of Highland Enclave, Carbon Gate, Mathgharia in Guwahati.

“Based on specific information, a search operation was conducted by officials of Narengi Beat office under Guwahati Range and detained Ray from his residence at around 8 am on Wednesday,” an official statement from the department read.
“After preliminary investigation and examination of eye witness, one carcass of barking deer packed in a white cement bag was recovered from the building. It was poached by Ray, along with another inmate, by twisting of the neck and breaking the right hind limb for the purpose of consumption of meat,” the statement further read.
Officials further informed that the arrested person was produced before the court of SDJM No-1, Kamrup Metro in connection with Guwahati Range offence No G/02 of 2022-23 for hunting, custody control and possession of carcass of barking deer for violation of provisions of Sections 9, 39 (1), 39 (3), 44, 51 of Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.
