It has been suspected that the man is involved with an international racket of fake currency smugglers.

Guwahati:

The Assam police seized fake Indian currency notes (FICN) amounting to Rs 7 lakh and arrested one person from the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) at Garchuk in Guwahati, April 19. The person, identified as Kinder M Sangma, is a resident of Tura, in South Garo Hills, the police informed.

“Acting on a tip off, a police team from Garchuk Police Station apprehended Sangma, 36, who was moving suspiciously in the ISBT. After a thorough search, FICN with fake value Rs 7 lakh was recovered from his bag,” Gorchuk officer-in-charge Inspector Satyendra Hajoary told The Meghalayan.

The police also informed that, during preliminary interrogation, Sangma revealed that he had bought the FICN from one person in Jorabat area of Guwahati.

“During interrogation, the person confessed that he bought the FICN from one Babul Das at Rs 3 lakh and was about to take it to his native village in Tura of South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya,” Hajoary said.

At the time of filing of the story, the police has been looking for Das, but a case under section 489 of the IPC has been registered at the Garchuk police station.

Sangma was produced before the court of the chief judicial magistrate of Kamrup (Metro) on Wednesday evening.
