Padma Shri awarded to Meghalaya’s Duitara maker Risingbor Kurkalang

The Padma Shri, which is the fourth highest civilian award in India, is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions in their respective fields.

Khasi Duitara instrument maker and musician, Risingbor Kurkalang, from East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, has been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri in the Art (Folk Music) category. The award was announced by the Centre on the eve of Republic Day, January 25, 2023.

Risingbor Kurkalang, 60, is a well-known name in the field of traditional folk music in Meghalaya. He is an expert in making and playing the Khasi Duitara, a traditional string instrument that is unique to the Khasi tribe of Meghalaya.

The Padma Shri, which is the fourth highest civilian award in India, is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions in their respective fields.

This is a significant achievement for Risingbor Kurkalang and a testament to his dedication and contributions to the field of traditional folk music.
