SHILLONG:
Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal, on September 28, informed that the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati has submitted a report on the study related to the proposed retrofitting of the Umiam bridge.
Speaking to reporters, Mondal said that the report is now being studied by a technical committee comprising officials from the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) and the state Public Works Department (PWD), which was constituted to examine the matter.
“Very soon, the department will also study the report and take a decision accordingly but it is moving in the right direction,” he said.
On May 16, Mondal along with experts from the institute conducted an inspection of the Umiam bridge after concerns were raised on the safety of the bridge. On physical verification during the site inspection, they have found that the bearings of the bridge were not in good condition.
