Shillong/Nongpoh:
Four persons lost their lives and several others sustained severe injuries in three separate incidents of road mishaps in Shillong and Ri Bhoi district in the 24 hours.
While one person, identified as Subunkar Deb, a resident of Shillong, died on the spot after a speeding pick-up truck rammed into the deceased’s two-wheeler near ICICI BANK, Main Secretariat Building in the city, three others lost their lives in two different incidents of road mishap at NH 6, Umling, and Shillong Bypass in Ri Bhoi District.
A witness, Jamil Ahmed, the state president of Rashtriya Lok Janashakti Party (RLJP), who was passing by the spot after the mishap, said that despite repeated calls, the 108-emergency helpline service didn’t send an ambulance. “They did pick one call and said, ’We don’t have an ambulance now, we are helpless’,” Ahmed said.
Ahmed, however, informed that a policeman present at the spot helped the injured, who was bleeding profusely, and rushed her to the Civil Hospital. As per reports, the girl is undergoing treatment in the hospital, and her condition is said to be stable.
In the mishap in Umling on May 10, two persons, identified as Ronywan Bamon (19) and Deionmi Suting (19), died on the spot after being hit by an over-speeding truck. According to the police, both Bamon and Suting were automobile mechanics and were fixing tyres of a dumping truck on the roadside when the accident happened.
On May 11, one person died on the spot and two others sustained severe injuries in a road mishap at Shillong Bypass after a speeding mutli-utility-vehicle (MUV) lost control and rammed into a hatchback car that was moving from the opposite direction.
While the driver of the MUV died on the spot, two others travelling in the car sustained severe injuries, and were rushed to Bhoirymbong CHC for immediate medical attention, the police added. Meanwhile, police have initiated an investigation into the accident.
