Pollution of water bodies in and around Tura banned under Section 144 Cr PC

Tura, February 28, 2024: Pollution of water bodies in Tura and adjoining areas has been prohibited by West Garo Hills district administration in view of the hot dry summer approaching with water scarcity on the rise and people having to depend on streams and other water bodies to obtain thia precious commodity.

In view of the practice of waste disposal directly into water bodies near market areas both in town and rural areas including households residing near the water bodies are disposing waste directly into streams, etc the District Magistrate, West Garo Hills, Tura has issued an Order under Section 144 Cr PC prohibiting all individuals and entities from disposing of waste directly into streams within the jurisdiction of West Garo Hills district, stated the order by West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani on Wednesday.

Further, the order stated that all individuals and entities are to adhere to the Act as per the section 24 of Water (Prevention and Control Pollution) Act 1974 which prohibits the use of any stream or well for disposal of polluting matter.

The Order has directed the Chief Executive Officer, Tura Municipal Board, West Garo Hills and Sub-Divisional Magistrate to strictly enforce this order and take necessary actions against any violators in their respective jurisdiction and in addition to these the CEO, TMB has been asked to ensure action is taken to avoid any spill over of waste from the dumping area to nearby water body.

Local bodies and individuals have been encouraged to come forward and report any individuals or entities violating this order to the concerned authorities and anyone found violating this order will be liable for legal action under relevant provisions of the law.
