‘Poorest state’ tag prompts govt to frame economic policy

The CM said that the next five years are going to be a defining moment for the state of Meghalaya.

SHILLONG:

Days after Meghalaya was ranked as one of the top five poorest states in the country, as per the Niti Aayog’s National Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on July 20, said that the government will soon come up with an economic policy.

Sharing this at a programme at Shillong College on Thursday, Sangma said that in the next one to two months, the government will be coming up with a comprehensive economic policy that will focus on goals and targets set for the state in the next five years.

“We will share it with the public very soon. That will be an important game-changer in terms of overall economic development and prosperity of the state,” he said.

He said that the next five years are going to be a defining moment for the state of Meghalaya.

Sangma further said that the government has had plans for the last five years that were obstructed due to COVID-19 and other challenges in the form of resources or manpower.

As per the MPI: A Progress Review 2023 released by the Niti Aayog on July 17, Meghalaya recorded 32.54 per cent of the population with multidimensional poverty, based on the National Family Health Survey or NFHS-5 of 2019-21, against 27.79 per cent in NFHS-4.
