SHILLONG:
In view of the violence and arson committed by an “unlawful and unruly” mob who set ablaze five government vehicles and one private vehicle, besides pelting of stones and damaging the office building of the Deputy Commissioner, Eastern West Khasi Hills District in Mairang on March 2, the District Magistrate has issued an order under Section 144 CrPC, promulgating night curfew from 6 pm to 6 am daily with effect from March 3 till further order.
The order also prohibited the assembly of more than five persons in all the government office complexes located at Mawsawa locality, Sangshong village, Umwiehsup locality and Mairang Mission village.
This order was issued to ensure peace and security of the general public and safeguarding public properties.
The order was necessitated as it has been made to appear to the District Magistrate that the said violence and arson was carried out by members of certain organised groups and associations to achieve their objectives and, “it is apprehended that such groups and association might still continue carrying out such unlawful assembly and acts of violence and arson to further their interest.”
