Pradyot Debbarma proposes committee to preserve indigenous languages

The proposed LDC will also go a long way in preserving other indigenous cultures and languages in TTAADC, Debbarma said.

AGARTALA:

The chairperson of the Administration Reform Committee (ARC) of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, on February 22, urged the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the district council to set up a Language Development Committee (LDC) to preserve indigenous languages in the council.

Debbarma, who is also the chairperson of TIPRA Motha, wrote a letter to the CEO in this regard, stating, “It has come to my knowledge that there may be some miscommunication regarding various issues pertaining to smaller non-Kokborok speaking indigenous tribes. Therefore, as the chairperson of the Advisory Reforms Committee, I request you to kindly look into this matter with utmost seriousness.”

Pointing out that promotion of Kokborok language is “very important”, he emphasised that “everyone must be sensitive to other non-Kokborok tribes living in Tripura”, adding that there should not be any bias against them, especially in terms of employment.

“The proposed LDC will also go a long way in preserving other indigenous cultures and languages in TTAADC. Considering the Tiprasa community has suffered as a minority, we must not repeat it on our other smaller communities, who are also an integral part of the Tiprasa community. This is how we can remain united,” Debbarma wrote.
