Prayers and fasting mark observance of Good Friday in Garo Hills

Tura, March 29: One of the most significant religious event in Christianity- Good Friday marking the crucifixion of Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross, was observed across the length of Garo Hills with Christians heading to church to offer prayers in commemoration of this historical event.

The day was marked by fasting or abstinence from food by devout Catholics as well as offering confessions and penance, while other Christian congregations held special church service to observe the day.

A late afternoon storm in Tura failed to deter devotees as they flocked to church in time for the special service.

Catholic faithful took part in the religious “Stations of the Cross” ritual in which they re-enacted the last journey of Christ to Mount Calvary where he was crucified.

In many of the churches in Garo Hills, devotees carried the cross from one station to another in and around the church premises, a total of 14 stations that Christ endured, to pay homage to Christ.

Good Friday also marks the conclusion of the Stations of the Cross ritual that began at the start of Lent, 40 days ago.

On Saturday night, the Catholic Church will observe Easter Vigil with the lighting of the Paschal candle before midnight.

The Paschal candle is the first candle to be lit with a flame from the sacred fire, representing the light of Christ coming into the world. The flame represents the risen Christ, as a symbol of light and life dispelling darkness and death. It will usher in the celebration of Easter and the resurrection of Christ, on the third day of his crucifixion.
