Rs 1.25 cr contraband seized in Jaintia Hills

The apprehended driver is reported to have claimed that the consignment of betel nuts originated from Myanmar and was bound towards Barpeta from Silchar, Assam.

JOWAI:

Acting on specific tip-off, troops of 172 Battalion of the Border Security Force Meghalaya seized a truck carrying processed betel nuts worth Rs 1.12 crore from  Umkiang in East Jaiñtia Hills on Tuesday.

The apprehended driver is reported to have claimed that the consignment of betel nuts originated from Myanmar and was bound towards Barpeta from Silchar, Assam.

A first information report was registered, and the driver, along with the consignment, were placed in custody of Umkiang Police Station. This is the third consecutive seizure of betel nuts from the same area.

In a similar operation, troops of the 04 Battalion seized clothing items, mostly sarees, worth Rs 13 lakh from the bordering area of Muktapur, West Jaintia Hills. In this case, the consignment was headed to Bangladesh. The seized items were handed over to the customs office in Dawki for further action.
