Rs 2700 crore budget allocation to boost education in state: CM

TURA:

An allocation of approximately Rs 2700 crore for the education sector will be a game-changer for Meghalaya, believes chief minister Conrad K Sangma.

“Close to 20 per cent of the entire budget for the state is being accorded to education. It amounts to Rs 2700 crore out of Rs 16000 crore annually,” informed the chief minister, while inaugurating a new school building at A’kkongre locality in his home constituency of South Tura on April 29.

The building, constructed at a cost of Rs 1.47 crore, comprises digital classrooms, a science laboratory, a computer lab and learning aids.

The construction of the school building and facilities were funded by the Asian Development Bank’s Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya and implemented by the Education Department.

The chief minister also announced that the government has sanctioned an additional Rs 170 crores in the current financial year for basic renovation of around 2500 lower primary (LP), upper primary (UP) schools and upgradation of about 70 LP and UP schools, including government secondary and higher secondary schools.

The chief minister said that the additional funding is being given to ensure there is an overall revamping of government educational infrastructure across the state to ensure children avail quality education.
