SHILLONG:

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator from Gambegre, Saleng Sangma, has said that Assam has border disputes with every state of the North East.

“Assam is not provoking only one state but even to the other states it is doing the same,” Sangma told reporters.

He said that looking at the past, Mukroh’s incident is not the only instance but it has happened in Langpih too in 2010 and in other areas as well where the state has a border with Assam.

The NCP legislator said that the North East region does not have border disputes with other countries like Bangladesh or Myanmar but there are issues among the states within India.

Blaming the Assam authorities for the killing of the six persons in Mukroh, Sangma said, “If they think we are all Indians they should not have created those unnecessary situations.”

He said that the Meghalaya government should take action against those involved since the incident happened inside Meghalaya and it is not an area of difference.

The Gambegre legislator also said that from the time the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) took over the government in 2018, there were lots of agitations.

“These agitations were not only by the NGOs but by teachers, government employees and even doctors,” Sangma said.

He also said that looking at the current situation the government is facing huge anti-incumbency.

“I don’t know which political party is going to take advantage of the situation,” the lone NCP legislator said.

Meanwhile, Sangma also said that instead of a Garo state more tribals should be part of all-India services like Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service and Indian Foreign Service and other allied services.

“Then only we will be equipped if we get a separate state. This is what I want,” he said.
