A mini pick up truck, which was overloaded with people keen to witness an election rally of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma at Rongara-Siju constituency of South Garo Hills, met with an accident near Gurpani village of Rongara resulting in several passengers, including two women, sustaining injuries.
As many as 27 villagers from Moheskola Pasgaon area had boarded the vehicle, keen to head to the election rally, despite the driver reportedly expressing concern that the vehicle was unfit for such a heavy load.
As the vehicle moved towards the campaign venue it lost control and fell on its side causing injury to scores of passengers including a woman, who has now been hospitalised with head injuries at Rongara health centre hospital.
Election meetings in Garo Hills are a gala fair with the full package of quick sale of food items, inducements to supporters, music and dance, and the most important and sought after speeches by political leaders as they speak of their work, their future plans and lambasting of opponents, all in a three week period before the ballot box opens for voting.
