Shillong College observes National Statistics Day

The chief guest of the event Professor T K Chakrabarty, NEHU addressed the participants and delivered a presentation on the importance of the statistics and SDG framework

SHILLONG:

The National Sample Survey Office (Field Operations Division), Regional Office, Shillong celebrated the 17th National Statistics Day, at Shillong College, on Thursday, in line with this year’s theme ‘Alignment of State Indicator Framework with National Indicator Framework for monitoring Sustainable Development Goals’.

The chief guest of the event Professor T K Chakrabarty, NEHU addressed the participants and delivered a presentation on the importance of the statistics and SDG framework, further explaining the importance of aligning States’ own Indicator frame with the National indicator frame for effective monitoring of SDGs.

 

Delivering his keynote address in the event, N Mohondas Singh, Joint Director and Regional Head NSSO (FOD) Shillong briefed participants about the life of Professor Mahalanobis and his achievements. He stressed the importance of the presence of reliable data in policy making and appealed to people for cooperation whenever NSSO officials visit them for collecting data for various surveys conducted by NSSO.

 

Furthermore, Singh shared information about MoSPI’s contribution in the development of the State Indicator framework aligned with the National Indicator framework for effective monitoring of SDG goals.

 

While Dr E Kharkongor, Principal, Shillong College also stressed the importance of Statistics and reliable data and stressed on interaction programmes to facilitate job opportunities for students who opt statistics as a subject, Professor Don Manik Syiem, Shillong College and Professor Evarilang Tariang, Shankar Dev College, Shillong delivered a brief presentation on the theme of Statistics Day 2023.

 

A quiz session was also conducted about the awareness of Statistics. M Marwein Deputy Director, DES Meghalaya; M Nongrum, Assistant Director, NSSO (FOD) RO Shillong; senior and retired officials of NSSO (FOD), State officials, academicians and students from different colleges participated in the event.

 

The Government of India has declared June 29 as “National Statistics Day” every year, which is the birth anniversary of Professor P C Mahalanobis (1893-1972) who is widely accredited as the “Father of the Indian Statistical System”. Statistics Day aims to create public awareness on the role and importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation for development of a country.
