SHILLONG:
The Special judge (POCSO) court in Shillong on November 1 sentenced two individuals to 14 years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000 each after they were found guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl.
The case traces back to 2017 when the victim, a class VII student, reportedly suffered multiple sexual assaults by Mortonjune Kharbani, aged between 45 and 50 years, at her residence while she was alone.
The incident came to light on December 3, 2018, when the survivor reported the offenses at Mawngap Police Station.
The investigation was conducted by women police station in-charge (WPSI) Larisha Kharjana, leading to the identification and subsequent charging of another suspect, Lumding Syiemlieh.
Following thorough scrutiny and legal proceedings, both accused, Mortonjune Kharbani and Lumding Syiemlieh, were charge-sheeted in January 2019.
The trial took place in the Special Judge (POCSO) Court in Shillong, where a prosecution case was presented, with the survivor’s testimony playing a pivotal role in establishing the guilt of the accused.
