Shillong’s new landfill yet to be acquired, land identification process ongoing: Dy CM Dhar

Last year, Dhar informed that the forest department is still preparing a report on whether the land at Nonghali village is feasible or not.

SHILLONG:

The State government is yet to acquire land for the setting up of a new landfill for Shillong.

“We are yet to get a new land as the process of identification is still on,” Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar said.

Last year, Dhar informed that the forest department is still preparing a report on whether the land at Nonghali village is feasible or not.

“If the land is feasible for setting up of the landfill, we will go for a public hearing. If the village is willing we will go ahead but if the village does not want to, we will stop it. Simple,” he had said.

The setting of a new landfill is required after the lifespan of the dumping ground at Marten in Mawlai Mawiong has expired. The 18-acre site at Marten has been in use by the Shillong Municipal Board since 1938.

The Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM), on August 29, 2023, expressed opposition against the move of the government to acquire the land at Nonghali.

The HNYM in its memorandum to Dhar had also questioned the decision of the headman of Nonghali Hunboklang Mynsong to provide 200 acres of land to the department.
