SMB denies leakage of waste from Marten to Umiam lake

In response, the CEO of the board, JP Lakiang, stated that the SMB only adheres to the guidelines established by the Meghalaya Pollution Board and that they only renewed the plants that have been in use since 2007.

SHILLONG:

The executive engineer of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) FB Chyne, on April 6, said that the National Hynniewtrep People’s Front’s assertion that the Marten’s waste flows to Umiam Lake is erroneous and that the marten has its own tank for storing waste and a proper wall to prevent the flow of waste.

Similar allegations were made regarding the SMB’s use of the incinerator without receiving a no-objection certificate from Mawiong Umjapung and Mawlai town. In response, the CEO of the board, JP Lakiang, stated that the SMB only adheres to the guidelines established by the Meghalaya Pollution Board and that they only renewed the plants that have been in use since 2007.
