SSB conducts ops alert exercise after revival of militancy in BTR

On January 6, the police had arrested three leaders of different organizations from different places in Kokrajhar.

GUWAHATI:

In the aftermath of the arrest of three Bodo leaders on the charges of floating a new militant outfit in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), troops of 31 Battalion Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Gossaigaon conducted the operational alert exercise in the area starting from BP No 115 to 150 along Indo-Bhutan border and 15 km area in the Indian side under the command of commandant Chiranjib Bhattacharjee.

“The aim of the exercise is for detecting and neutralization the insurgents and their hideouts in the forest area in and around the area of responsibility,” an SSB spokesperson said.

“We are revamping of the security of the SSB Border Outpost and Company and other deployments. Domination of the area of responsibility through vigorous patrolling, Naka and ambush covering the sensitive areas. We also monitor the activities of suspected linkmen and over-ground workers working for the militants’ groups and apprehending them while attempting any illegal activity,” he also said.

It also aims to detect anti-social elements, insurgents, timber smugglers, and poachers in the forest area and in and around the area of responsibility and to create a sense of security among the border population.

On January 6, police arrested three leaders of different organizations from different places in Kokrajhar district which includes former MLA of Chapaguri constituency-Hitesh Basumatary (Baksa), Daorao Dekhreb Narzary (Kokrajhar), working president of Bodoland Janajati Suraksha Mancha (BJSM) and Bikram Daimary (Udalguri), president of Bodoland Contractors’ Association (BCA).

They were planning to form a militant outfit which is likely to come into existence on Republic Day.

Kokrajhar additional SP Nabanita Sarma said, “A group of people were trying to float a new terrorist outfit any time soon.”

“Based on specific input arrested three persons in connection with the move for forming a new militant outfit. Investigation and cross-examination were going on and everything will come to light after the investigation is over,” she said.

Meanwhile, Special DGP GP Singh has been camping in Kokrajhar since Monday to monitor the situation.
