State govt approves Meghalaya Mental Health and Social Care Policy

Addressing the press after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that issues on mental health were not given their due importance in the past.

SHILLONG:
The State Cabinet of Meghalaya on November 29 approved the Meghalaya Mental Health and Social Care Policy, becoming the third state in the country to come out with such a policy.
Addressing the press after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that issues on mental health were not given their due importance in the past.
He observed that the state and the government has neglected the mental health issue and felt the need to come up with a comprehensive policy.
“We are the third state in the country to have come out with this policy and I am sure that this particular policy will ensure that proper attention should be given to mental health, especially when it comes to young children, adolescents, teenagers. It is a vast subject that covers different aspects of individual lives,” Sangma said.
The Cabinet also approved the amendment of Meghalaya Victim Compensation Scheme, 2019 and amendments were made as per the national policy.
He said that amendments were made in which compensation was enhanced and other different aspects were added to it
