Suspended top cop GK Iangrai admitted in city hospital

“Iangrai was granted bail by the district court in all the cases and finally we have been able to release him from district jail also known as the correctional home last night,” Iangrai’s lawyer Phuyo Yobin said on March 31.

MEGHALAYA:

Suspended top cop GK Iangrai, who was released on bail from District Jail on the night of March 30, has been admitted in a city hospital after he complained of suffering from some ailments.

“Iangrai was granted bail by the district court in all the cases and finally we have been able to release him from district jail also known as the correctional home last night,” Iangrai’s lawyer Phuyo Yobin said on March 31.

The former Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Meghalaya Police was arrested in November 2, 2022 in two cases pertaining to the Nationwide Emergency Response System(NERS), dry ration supply and thereafter, based on inquiry report, another four more cases were registered against him, one of which was connected to the purchase and supply of police vehicles.

“CID registered three cases against him and they tried best to arrest him; they had moved an application for arrest warrant before the district court but we were able to fight and move anticipatory bail in all those three cases,” Yobin added.

According to Iangrai’s counsel, so far, six cases have been registered against the suspended police office but none of them have been charge-sheeted.

“Many of the cases are at the nascent stage of investigation. Police will investigate the cases but Iangrai has given an assurance to the court that he is not running away. He has always cooperated with the investigation and will continue to do so,” the counsel said.

When asked whether there are any chances of Iangrai from being re-arrested, Yobin replied in the negative. “Whatever sections they have charged against him have been filed and I don’t find any additional charges that can be invoked here; so the chances of getting re-arrested is slim,” he added.

When asked about their defense strategy, Yobin said that as of now, they are not privy to any of the evidences that the Investigating Officer is collecting against Iangrai. “So right now, it is too early to plan our defense strategy. As and when they give us a copy of the charge-sheet, we will be able to understand where our defense lies. At present, it is subjudice and at a nascent stage of investigation,” the counsel said.
